We've been working with the Van der Kamp Vineyard since 1996 with great variations in wine style over the 13
years. Having said that, the 2009 vintage produced one of the richest, most hedonistic Van der Kamp Vineyard
Pinot Noirs we have ever made.
We picked our 4 different sections of Van der Kamp Pinot Noir on dates ranging from September 28 to October
9. The chemistry on each section varied considerably with a range of sugars from 23.9 to 28 brix. However, the
one constant seemed to be fairly low levels of acidity. When this happens, our belief is that we can make some
adjustments to the wine by adding some acid during the cold soak period (but not after fermentation has started)
but you cannot change the basic character of the wine without it standing out. Therefore, we made a few small
additions, but general the Van der Kamp Pinot Noir was made in 2009 in a more lush, forward style.
We chose not the rack the Van der Kamp Pinot Noir until right before bottling, selecting only a very few barrels
for the final wine. It was bottled in August of 2010, and has been resting in bottle ever since. The 2009 Siduri
Van der Kamp Vineyard Pinot Noir is truly a hedonistic wine. While it still possesses Van der Kamp's signature
smoked meat and earthen characteristics, it also has loads of sweet black cherry fruit. This is framed by vanilla
structure from oak and hints of dried herbs. Don't hesitate to open a bottle of this wine and enjoy it with dinner
in the nearer term.
