The 2009 vintage in California was the third year of a drought. This sounds bad, but, because of the generally
moderate growing season it led to vines that were stressed but not overly so. Stressed vines often
produce more concentrated fruit and, given amply hang-time, rich flavors. That was certainly the case
with our 2009 Sonoma County Pinot Noir.
The 2009 Siduri Sonoma County Pinot Noir is a blend of six different vineyards from the Sonoma Coast,
Sonoma Mountain, and Russian River appellations. Specifically, it is a blend of Sonatera Vineyard Pinot
Noir, along with Van der Kamp, Sapphire Hill, Forestville, Parsons', and Lewis Vineyards. This also
means that it is a blend of many different Pinot Noir clones including Martini, Pommard, Mt. Eden, 115,
667, and 777. This blend of sites and clones allows us to make a more layered, complex wine. We further
supplement this complexity by using varying percentages of whole clusters in the fermentation,
along with a combination of different cooperage houses (all French oak). Ultimately, these individual
wines are married together to produce our Sonoma County Pinot Noir.
The 2009 Siduri Sonoma County Pinot Noir may be the best Sonoma County Pinot Noir we have yet
made. Full of rich red and black fruits, with hints of vanilla from the oak, and a creamy, seamless texture,
this is truly everything we could wish for in our Appellation blend.
