WELCOME BACK! It is fantastic to have the Hirsch Vineyard back in the house!
As you may recall, we did not produce a Hirsch Pinot Noir in 2008 due to smoke taint
from fires near the vineyard. In fact, the 2008 vintage was the first vintage without a
Siduri Hirsch Pinot Noir since we started buying grapes from this Sonoma Coast site in
1995. Having never dealt with smoke taint issues previously we were initially concerned
that there might be some carry-over damage, but we knew immediately once the wine
made it into barrel that this wouldn't be a concern. In fact, from early on in it's life, this
has been one of our favorite 2009 Pinot Noirs.
Out of 2.75 acres of Pinot Noir we picked 3.88 tons of fruit on September 14, 2009. We
chose to ferment most of the Mt. Eden and Pommard clones together in one tank, while
keeping one bin of Mt. Eden separate . As is often the case with the Hirsch Vineyard fruit,
the flavors were wonderfully ripe and complex, but the sugars were not particularly high
(23.9 and 24.2 brix). We fermented the wine entirely without inoculation, and pressed it
off to approximately 50% new French oak. Ultimately, we selected only 4 barrels to make
the final 2010 Siduri Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir.
