2007 Cargasacchi Vineyard Pinot Noir

With the 2007 vintage at Cargasacchi we attempted to “raise the bar” and increase the overall quality of what has become one of our most famous vineyards. To achieve this, we worked with Peter Cargasacchi in the vineyard to assure even ripening, by thinning
clusters that were ripening behind the others, this despite the fact that yields were already rather low (we ended up with less than 6 tons out of 4 acres).

We also split the fruit into two lots, fermenting one lot in a tank and the other in 1-ton fermenting bins. We utilized a good amount of whole clusters on the lot in the tank but completely destemmed the lot in the bins.

Finally, in a blind tasting we carefully selected barrels to make the final blend, with 62% of the barrels making the cut for the final wine. The final wine may be the most complete and complex Cargasacchi Vineyard Pinot Noir
we have produced. The nose is full of dark fruits, earth, and a bit of wet stone. In the mouth there are blackberries, plums, and hints of dried herbs and even a bit of minerality. There are some tannins on the end of the wine, but not too many, as the flavors continue to build throughout the lingering finish. Although we like this wine a great deal now we believe it will only be better with a few years in the cellar.

Ripe to the point of super-mature, this Pinot explodes with flavors of black and red raspberries, cherries, milk chocolate, coffee and spice. Almost like a glass of Kahlua, with the softness that implies. - S.H.
