“Carg and Clos, Clos and Carg.” It is a bit
of a mantra here at the winery (this is especially true when you actually look at the definition
of mantra, “A sacred verbal formula repeated in prayer, meditation, or incantation, such
as an invocation of a god, a magic spell, or a syllable or portion of scripture containing mystical
potentialities”). There is truly something magical about these two fantastic vineyards.
On their own they certainly produce two of our most distinctive and highly reviewed wines.
And when blended together the wine that is produced, this wine - the 2006 Siduri Sta. Rita
Hills Pinot Noir - produces something altogether different than the vineyards separately.
The 2006 Siduri Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir is a blend of 66% Cargasacchi Vineyard Pinot
Noir and 34% Clos Pepe fruit. The wine was fermented in a combination of tanks and oneton
bins using a significant percentage of whole clusters (this is particularly true on the Cargasacchi
part of the blend). Aged in 50% new French oak for 10 months, the wine was ultimately
bottled without fining or filtration in August of 2007.
Thus far, we have only received one review on this wine (it is a new release after all), but
what a review it was! PinotReport rated the wine 92 points and said this about it, “Medium
ruby, color, deep, black cherry aromas with spice and pepper; ripe and rich...some tannin
and toasty okay; good structure and balance; long finish. Bigger style with delicious black
cherry, spice and pepper flavors.” In our opinion, this is our most successful Sta. Rita Hills
Appellation Pinot Noir to date and, although it is a big Pinot, it shows the requisite acidity to
age well and appeal to a wide spectrum of Pinot Noir drinkers.
