Winemakers’ Comments
We’ve produced a Santa Lucia Highlands Appellation Pinot Noir since the 1999 vintage and it has consistently proven to be one of our most complex, complete, and hedonistic blends. This success should come as little surprise given the pedigree of the vineyards involved. There is simply something special about blending Rosella’s, Garys’, and Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noirs.

The 2003 Siduri Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir will rank with the 1999 and 2001 as the finest of these SLH Appellation blends (maybe there’s something about the odd years). The 2003 is a blend of 68% Rosella’s Vineyard, 24% Garys’ Vineyard, and 8% Pisoni Vineyard. It was picked between September 17th and 24th and consists of 4 different clones of Pinot Noir - the Pisoni clone, Dijon clone 777, Dijon clone 113, and the Pommard clone. We fermented each of the different vineyards and their respective components separately and aged them individually before tasting, barrel by barrel, to come up with this blend.

The 2003 Siduri Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is a superb blend exhibiting concentrated blackberry jam, black cherry, and huckleberry fruit flavors. Rich and yet elegantly styled, this wine already shows the complexity of its heritage while exhibiting the acid and structure to pair well with holiday foods.

Accolades for the 2003 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

Score: 87 - The 2003 Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands displays a dark ruby color in addition to forest floor, resin, and black fruit characteristics, a firm, muscular structure, attractive sweet fruits, and a smoky black cherry and currant style. Its suppleness suggests drinking it over the next 2-3 years.

This is a blend of Pisoni, Rosella’s and Garys’ vineyards; it’s rich and full with the trademark black cherry and smoky bacon flavors—really delicious.
