The old-vine Carlisle Vineyard was planted in 1927 in an especially cool area of the Russian River Valley. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Vineyards now surround the Carlisle Vineyard, but they are newcomers to the area by comparison. The Carlisle Vineyard harkens back to the time when grapes other than Pinot and Chardonnay dominated the Russian River Valley. The Carlisle is also a throwback Vineyard in that it is a field blend vineyard, containing a high percentage of other grapes that were traditionally planted with Zinfandel to provide an increased depth and backbone. The wine has lively dark fruit on the palate, with Indian spice and floral notes. This is a deep and supple Zin that finishes with harmonious tannins.
