Winemakers' Comments
Critics of California Pinot Noir often characterize the wines as Syrah-like. These critics have certainly never tasted one of our Sapphire Hill Pinot Noirs. The Sapphire Hill Vineyard, located in the Russian River appellation just west of the Sonoma County Airport, has always produced one of our most elegant, most balanced Pinot Noirs. At the winery we describe it as a “no elbows, no knees” type of wine. In otherwords, nothing pokes out at you. The San Francisco Chronicle, in their praise of this wine, even quoted our phrase and went on to describe the wine using terms such as “strawberry fruit,” “mineral notes,” and “long finish.”
In addition, the Connoisseurs'’ Guide to California Wine just rated this wine 90 points. These great reviews are certainly more than welcome but what we enjoy the most is popping a bottle of the 2005 Sapphire Hill Pinot Noir and seeing how wonderfully it tastes now and then opening an older bottle and noticing how well this always beautifully balanced, red-fruited Pinot Noir ages.
