Winemakers’ Comments
The 2003 vintage was our second year of production from the Olivet Grange Vineyard . From the vineyard management to our winemaking it was definitely a step up from the debut vintage. We took several of the lessons that we learned from dealing with the 2002 fruit and put them into place in 2003 and the wine responded quite favorably. Quite frankly, the 2003 Olivet Grange Pinot Noir is one of the stars from the Russian River appellation in this vintage. Perhaps that is why the wine just received a 91 point rating from the Wine Spectator!
One of the most important things that we were able to do in 2003 was keep all of the clones from the vineyard separate . Thus we fermented and barreled down the 777, 667, 115, and 114 clones as if they were their own separate wine and keep them apart until we sat down and decided on the final blend. Doing this allowed us to address each of the clone’s various needs and then, by blending only the best barrels together, produce a superb Russian River Pinot Noir. The Wine Spectator said this about the wine, “Toasty oak gives it an initial aromatic lift and the core cherry, plum and wild berry quickly fill in the gaps. Long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2008.”
