Winemakers’ Comments
Sometimes in winemaking (and in life as well) a series of circumstances come together in a way that is very much out of your control and seemingly work together to produce a great wine.
Such was the case with our 2003 Oregon Pinot Noirs.

The challenge in Oregon in 2003 was to produce a wine that both reflected the vintage and also showed some true sense of Oregonian place. The vintage was much more California in character—extremely warm and dry. Certain vineyards are favored in a year such as this and the Muirfield Vineyard in particular did extremely well in 2003. For example, Muirfield is in Washington County in Laurelwood soils. The wines from these type of soils tend to be a bit more lean and higher in acid than the rest of the Willamette Valley. In 2003 this was a great advantage as it helped keep the wines in balance despite the heat. The Muirfield Vineyard is also somewhat older (13 years old) and thus has roots that are deep enough to draw water from the ground—yet another advantage in such dry conditions.

The 2003 Siduri Muirfield Vineyard Pinot Noir rivals the 2002 wine as our most successful Muirfield Pinot Noir (and one of our most successful Oregon Pinot Noirs) to date. The wine just received a 90 rating from the Wine Spectator and they described it this way, “Smooth and subtle, with a meaty edge to the raspberry and cola flavors, lingering effectively on the beautifully modulated finish.  Has real style.  Drink now through 2012.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Spicy and a bit closed; some savory spice and dark fruit notes on the palate.
