2001 PISONI VINEYARD PINOT NOIR

We've almost run out of things to say about the Pisoni Vineyard. Year in and year out the Pisoni Vineyard has produced our most forward and hedonistic wine. It has also produced our most highly reviewed wine. The 2000 vintage, for example received 93 ratings from Robert Parker and the Wine Enthusiast, 92 ratings from Stephen Tanzer and Wine & Spirits, and a 90 rating from the Wine Spectator. You don't mess with success and yet we always want to find a way to build more complexity into our Pisoni Vineyard Pinot. We think we found a way to do this with the 2001 Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir.

The winemaking permutations that we went through to produce the 2001 Siduri Pisoni Vineyard are staggering. We picked five different sections of the Pisoni Vineyard, with two different types of trellises, five different yields, harvested on three different dates. We utilized 6 different yeast types and barrels from 9 different cooperage houses, while managing to keep these lots separate by pressing directly to barrel. Needless to say, it is a complex process but complexity in the winery seems to be reflected by complexity in the bottle. We feel certain that when you taste these wines you will find that our efforts have reaped substantial rewards.

The 2001 Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir remains the "big brother" of the Santa Lucia Highlands. It is the most concentrated, richest, heaviest, and most hedonistic wine that the Appellation produces. However, the 2001 is not entirely similar to our previous vintages. It is more tightly wound than previous vintages. The wine clearly improves with 24 hours aeration and, even at that point, you can tell that there is more left in the wine just waiting to unfold. This is a wine for the ages and one that will only improve with time.
