Siduri SPRING 2024 Club Wines

Hello Siduri Club Members!

Everyone here at Siduri is so glad that Spring has finally sprung, and the vines have awoken from their dormancy! We are so grateful you are joining us on this release, as the young 2022 vintage continues to excite us — the wines are, as some say, “baby chicks just beginning to peck at their shells”, which feels very appropriate for this time of year. What strikes me about this release is the range of personalities of these Pinot Noirs. Barbieri and Hapgood are rich, deep, and brooding, Seascape and John Sebastiano are fruit-driven, floral, and elegant, while Gran Moraine and Bloomfield lean towards the earthy side, with plenty of rich, dark fruit in their cores. Everyone here at Siduri has been enjoying these 2022 vintage Pinot Noirs, and we are eager to share them with you. That said, while we are looking back, we are also looking ahead this time of year — ahead with the optimism that the start of each growing season brings. Each Spring, the never-ending road trip begins, and I could not be happier to hit the road to see what the growing season brings us, and to catch up with our friends and winegrowers all along the Pacific Coast. As always, we are incredibly grateful for your support, and we hope we can share a glass of Siduri here soon. I have always said that if you have as much fun drinking the wines as we do making them, we have done our job. With that, let us raise a glass to our continued enjoyment of the 2022 vintage — and the upcoming 2024 harvest!

Cheers!

2022 Seascape Vineyard Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

One of our new favorites, sitting 1,150 feet overlooking Bodega Bay, Seascape is extremely cold — often ripening in late October — almost always the last vineyard that we will pick. This gem of a vineyard was planted in 1998 next to the well-known Coastlands Vineyard and produces beautiful flavors from this cool ridgetop. Clone 1A is a rare find here, a late-ripening clone that pushes some stunning aromatics from the glass. Clone 777 gets ever-so-slightly riper and rounds out the mouthfeel and adds fresh, crunchy fruit. The 2022 Seascape leads with fresh red cherry, raspberry, and orange peel — leading to a lithe palate of cherry pie, pomegranate, and white pepper. Just a dash of whole cluster (10%) is used here to heighten earthy aromatics and add a bit more grip through the finish. A light touch of New French Oak is used, with 20% and 10 months of barrel age.

2022 Bloomfield Vineyard Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Nestled amidst the undulating hills southwest of Sebastopol, Bloomfield sits on the cool, breezy outskirts of Pinot Noir cultivation. Enveloped by fog and winds from the Petaluma Gap, it experiences stunning misty mornings, slowing down the ripening process and making it one of the final vineyards we harvest. The sandy soils offer excellent drainage and moderate vine vigor, typically resulting in crop yields of 1-2 tons per acre. The distinctive flavors of this untamed terrain are beautifully expressed in the wine, featuring notes of bramble, earth, and floral nuances characteristic of the “west-county” region. The warmer 2022 vintage was mild for this cool vineyard, which had a standout vintage. Clones 115, 777, and Pommard dominate this bottling, presenting aromas of black raspberry and damp earth, with a luscious palate of blackberry puree, black tea, and sandalwood lingering on the finish.

2022 Gran Moraine Vineyard Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton District

Situated within the heart of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA in the Willamette Valley, Gran Moraine Vineyard derives its name from the glacial movements during the last ice age. Deposits of glacial sediment, known as moraines, were left behind by the Missoula Floods in the northern Willamette Valley. Nestled within a rain shadow in the foothills of the coastal range, Gran Moraine Vineyard yields Pinot Noirs characterized by exceptional juiciness and lively acidity. Describing the 2022 vintage in the Yamhill-Carlton region as miraculous would hardly be an exaggeration. Following bud break, a severe frost struck, impacting young buds across many areas of the valley, posing a challenging path to recovery for the vines. Despite this setback, they managed to rebound admirably. Following a cool and wet spring, July ushered in a warm and dry summer. The Northern Willamette Valley then experienced its warmest October on record, with harvest commencing in the first week of October. The timing proved incredibly fortunate. The 2022 vintage from Gran Moraine Vineyard captivates with enticing aromas of pomegranate, blackberry, and espresso, leading into a decadent palate filled with plum, blueberry, and toasty notes.

2022 Hapgood Vineyard Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills

Nestled within the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills lies the Hapgood Vineyard, situated on a gentle north-facing slope with a slightly higher clay loam content compared to other sandy sites nearby, resulting in a richer palate expression. Hapgood is never hesitant to reveal its character — boasting a seamless integration of fruit, acidity, earthiness, and tannins. The vineyard favors stem inclusion, benefiting from the prolonged ripening period that yields ripe, lignified stems. Approximately 40% whole clusters are utilized for the Mt. Eden clone, contributing soft, subtle tannins and floral aromatics, while the Dijon 459 clone is entirely destemmed, enhancing the blend with abundant ripe fruit flavors. Aging for 10 months in 20% new French oak barrels, the 2022 Hapgood Vineyard Pinot Noir presents freshly opened rose, red cherry and pomegranate on the nose, followed by a luscious yet silky palate featuring maraschino cherry, baked strawberry, and allspice through the finish. Dominated by clone 459 with a touch of Mt. Eden, the 2022 vintage of Hapgood offers immediate drinking pleasure and possesses a seamlessly structured framework that promises graceful aging potential.

2022 John Sebastiano Vineyard Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills

Stretching along the eastern boundary of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, the John Sebastiano Vineyard enjoys a warmer microclimate within the valley. However, its steep slopes facing directly westward encounter the brisk ocean winds, resulting in notably diminutive clusters and berries, and consequently, wines of heightened concentration. Our selection encompasses five distinct sections within this vineyard, strategically chosen to expose us to varying wind influences, soil compositions, and clone variations. This amalgamation incorporates clones 459, 828, Mt. Eden, Swan, and Pommard, crafting a singular interpretation of this breathtaking terroir. Once harmonized, the 2022 John Sebastiano Pinot Noir reveals enticing aromas of fresh cranberry, raspberry, and anise, evolving into a palate of concentrated black fig, saline, and ginger. Known for its broad appeal, the wine’s opulent fruit core gradually unfolds in the glass, hinting at promising aging potential.

2022 Barbieri Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

The 2022 Barbieri Vineyard Pinot Noir comprised of clones 667, 777, 828, and Pommard, with a hint of whole cluster on the Pommard to enhance spice and texture. The clone 828 stands out in Barbieri, contributing thicker skins for added color and palate weight. Aromas of spiced plum, licorice, and cigar box waft from the glass, leading to a lush palate of black cherry, sage, and mocha. This 2022 Barbieri offering strikes a perfect balance, embodying all the classic characteristics of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Cheers to that! Nearly 20 years ago, we acquired fruit from this vineyard when it was planted with Zinfandel, and despite the vines showing signs of decline, they still yielded exceptional wine. Recognizing the need for replanting, the vineyard underwent a transformation, now boasting Pinot Noir vines after changing ownership, we are thrilled that this wine remains a favorite in our lineup!
